Rocket Fuel: I don't know how to deal with people that want to negotiate!

I've been having conversations recently with some new business owners, and they've been getting a little bit agitated and upset about how to deal with people that always constantly want to negotiate.

Hi, everybody, Julie here, The Sales Ace, bringing you a sales tip to help skyrocket your business.

And this one has been brought to you because I've been having conversations just recently with some new business owners, people that have never been in business before and are just setting up, and they've been getting a little bit agitated and upset about how to deal with people that always constantly want to negotiate.

Now, the art of negotiation is quite a big topic, but I can just cram some little nuggets of information and advice into this sales tip for you.

Here's how I go about negotiation

If anybody wants to negotiate with me on a price, my first question is “okay, so why is it you want to negotiate?” and I find out a little bit more about their reasons behind it.

And before I even make any decisions, I will step away and sometimes that's literally if I'm in a meeting, I'll take some time out. I'll gather my thoughts and I'll go away and think about it.

Now, the thing I'll say to you is in negotiation you want to try and get to win-win. You want to try and get to the point where everybody's happy. But if the customer is asking for something that I don't want to give, I'll try and meet them halfway. And if I can't meet them halfway and we can't work something out, then I don't work with them.

Because at the end of the day, I know my value, I know my worth, and my prices are my prices. And therefore, if that doesn't fit within their budget, then I'm quite happy to walk away.

So I suppose here's my advice: don't feel you have to negotiate. Try and get to a win-win, and you know what? If it doesn't work out, you don't have to do business with people.

It's your business, your rules. So don't forget that.

That's my little tip for this week, and I'll see you next week with one more!
